New Zealand 2012 Film Festival

The embassy of New Zealand, the Film Development Council of the Philippines and Shangri-la Plaza is proud to bring you award winning New Zealand films in their 2012 Film Festival. Get to watch it for FREE between February 23 - 28, 2012 at Shang Cineplex in Mandaluyong. There will be a lineup of 12 films, each having a different genre. Check the synopsis below. Remember to be there about an hour (or earlier) before screening starts since tickets are distributed on a first come 1st served basis. MTRCB classification may be confirmed at the ticket office




Synopsis:

Eagle vs. Shark
  • Lily is the quiet awkward loner who doesn't fit anywhere - but that could change. Jarrod Is a warrior in his own world who thinks he's brave and powerful and is blind to Lily's adoration - but that could change. Lily crashes Jarrod's party, ends up in his home town and leading role in his hell bent plan to beat up an old high school bully They tackle estranged family and stranger friends only to find the real foe may be in the mirror.
  • Delivering a poignant social punch about facing up to who you really are, the film is about accepting the good, the bad and the honestly awful - and when that happens everything can change.
Coffee and Allah
  • When Oromo Ethiopian Abeba Mohammed moves to suburban Mt Albert to unite with her sister under the refugee family reunion quota, she has nothing but her
    faith in Allah, a taste for Ethiopian coffee, & a zest for life to sustain her. From behind her purdah, and no knowledge of English, Abeba struggles to make a connection with the people of her new homeland. Nonu, a Samoan barrista at the local coffee shop takes a shine to her. But the cultural chasm separating them seems unbridgeable.
  • Until one afternoon, a spontaneous game of badmmton with an unknown neighbour ultimately leads Abeba to accept a gift of friendship.
Noise Control
  • When the local government animal control officer, Mr Wolf, shoots a local pre-school's pet rooster, if became local news. Responding to neighbor's complaints about the rooster crowing alt through the night, Mr Wolf shoots the rooster but unfortunately doesn't kill if. It is then discovered by children who are traumatized as they watch the rooster die. in this documentation, everyone involved including the mayor, neighbours, the pr-school teacher the local reporter, Mr Wolf & Joe Rooster himself have their say about the incident.

Tama Tu
  • Young Maori Battalion soldiers waif for night to fall in the ruins of a war-torn Italian home. Forced into silence, they keep themselves amused as any boys would, with jokes and laughter. As they try and ignore the reminders of war around them, a sign brings them back to the world of the dying.

  • The audition room is a minefield for three Asian actresses who are expected to be Asian in ways they're not completely comfortable with. When the humiliations

Sione’s Wedding

  • Sione is getting married. But there's a problem, well actually there are four problems. Blane's brother Michael and his three best mates Albert, Stanley & Sefa: the ladies' man, the good boy, the weird one & the party boy. They're 30-something, but they still act as if they're 16. They get drunk, they chase the wrong women and they have a remarkable record of causing chaos at every wedding they attend. But when Siofle bans the boys from his wedding they know something has to change.

Whale Rider

  • In every generation in a small New Zealand coastal village where Maori claim descent from Paikea, the Whale Rider, a male heir has succeeded to the chiefly title, The Chief's eldest son, Porouraflgi, fathers twins - a boy and a girl -but the boy and his mother die tragically in childbirth. The surviving girl is name Pai. Grief-stricken, her father leaves her to be raised by her grandparents, Kora and Flowers, Kora, the Chief, refuses to acknowledge Pai as the heir and calls for his people to bring their 12-yearold boys to him for training. Excluded from the sessions, Pai covertly enlists the help of her sympathetic uncle to learn the old ways.

Second Hand Wedding

  • Life is good for the Rose family. They live on the idyllic Kapiti Coast where the sunsets are spectacular, parking is sun free & second-hand bargains abound.   • Clouds gather however, when it becomes apparent that Cheryl has issues with her mother's voracioiJs bargain hunting, which she fears will ruin her wedding. So much so, that Cheryl won't tell her mother or wear her engagement ring, much with Stew's disappointment. It's a small town so if doesn't take long for Jill to find out. This causes a serious riff between mother & daughter, as Jill feels her trust has been betrayed, throwing into doubt her whole reason for lMng & puffing her
    bargain hunting abilities on the back burner

Boy

  • Boy is a dreamer who loves Michae I Jackson. He lives with his brother Rocky, a tribe of deserted cousins and his Nan, Boy s other hero, his father, Alamein, is the subject of Boy s fantasies, and he imagines him as a deep sea diver, war hero and a close relation of Michael Jackson (he can even dance like him). In reality Alamein is an inept wannabe gangster who has been lffJalf for robbery
  • When Alamein returns home after seven years away, Boy is forced to confront the man he thought he remembered find his own potential & learn to get along without the hero he had been hoping for.

No. 2

  • The heart has gone out of Manna Maria's family. There are no parties - they don't even fight anymore. Inspired by a dream of her childhood back in Fiji, Nanna demands that her grandchildren put on a big feast at which she will name her successor, The grandchildren reluctantly turn up, but as the day progresses their preparations unravel into chaos and an outraged Nanna calls the whole thing off.
  • That's when everyone realizes they have to pull out all the stops and give the crazy old lady what she wants, and what they all need. Infused with the heat and vibrancy of the South Pacific, No.2 is a big-hearted, exuberant story about what It takes to bring family together.
In my Father's Den
  • Paul, a battle weary war photographer, returns to his remote New Zealand hometown, when his father dies, and faces the past he left behind. To his surprise, he also finds sixteen year old Celia, the daughter of his first girlfriend, who hungers for the world beyond her small town. But many, including the members of both their families, frown upon their friendship and when Celia goes missing, Paul becomes increasingly persecuted as the pnme suspect in her disappearance.
  • As the violent and urgent truth gradually emerges Paul is forced to confront the family tragedy and betrayal he ran from as a youth, and to face the grievous consequences of silence and secrecy that has surrounded his entire adult life
