Brazil Film Festival 2011

  • Synopsis
    • Domesticas (Maids)
      • Six domestic workers share their thoughts about their employers and their experiences on the job in this satiric comedy. While we never see the people they work for, we're given a look at the absurdities and indignities of their daily routines, as well as a look into their lives outside work. One signs up for a modeling course only to discover she's being recruited for an escort service, while another finds herself having an affair with the chauffeur working for the same family, and a third falls for a good-looking criminal.
    • Filhos De Francisco (Two Sons of Francisco)
      • The story of Francisco, a very simple and poor man whose dream was to see his children become country music stars, and who made all the efforts to make it happen
    • Brava Gente Brazileira (Brave New Land)
      • A young Portuguese cartographer in the 18th century finds new forms of love, war and a wild new world in an expedition into South American heart.
    • Estorvo (Turbulence)
      • Based on the book of the same name by Chico Buarque, adapted, written and directed by Ruy Guerra, ESTORVO reproduces the existential nightmare of an anonymous character roaming through a large modern city. After a restless night, the protagonist (Me) is awoken by the doorbell ringing insistently.Through the peephole, he sees an unknown man in a suit and tie, who reminds him of someone he can’t quite place. He doesn’t know why the man is there, nor what he might want, but he is immediately certain of one thing: he represents a threat to his life. Dressing hurriedly, he takes advantage of the visitor’s momentary distraction, and makes his escape. But there is no doubt in his mind that the stranger is right behind him and that the nightmare has only just begun. This is the beginning of an hallucinating chase across town. Terrified, mistrustful of everything and everyone, affected by everyday violence, his own past, his phantoms, he sees long lost friends, tries to contact his dumb, absent mother, seeks the protection of his sister, with whom he has always had an ambiguous relationship, tries to get his ex-wife’s help and becomes involved in an increasingly suspenseful plot filled with a series of extraordinary characters: a nymphomaniac, bikers, thieves, marijuana growers, dealers, corrupt cops, everyone is living close to the edge. It is an aimless escape which penetrates deeper and deeper into his own world, betraying, stealing, degrading himself, trying to find the enigma of his journey on foot, to understand what it is he is running from, who is chasing him, where he is going. The answer comes on the edge of a knife.
    • O Hohem De Capa Preta (The Man in the Black Cape)
      • Biography of Brazilian congressman Tenório Cavalcanti, who used to appear in public carrying a machine-gun, and wearing a black cloak.
    • O Casamento De Louise (Louise’s Wedding)
