Win The Frazzled Cook GC

Tuesday, March 30, 2010 dfg 0 Comments

In the depths of Mandaluyong lies a clandestine restaurant called The Frazzled Cook. Last Friday, a few bloggers were invited to try out their food and service. Before the food came, I roamed around the restaurant to get the feel of it. I saw a good variety of literary books on the shelves, cool lighting fixtures, and not one chair was the same. But what I found most interesting were the rows of golden lucky cats, usually seen at Chinese stores, waving their paws synchronously near the main door.

Want to Win P1000 worth of The Frazzled Cook food items? Read on

Let the food be served...

Herbed Chicken Salad - P275
Homemade Iced Tea - P95/glass

Ahhh... The homemade Iced Tea was definitely refreshing. It's not your typical powdered iced tea that tastes like sugar. For the entire evening, I was able to slug down 3 glasses of this great stuff. The dressing on the Herbed Chicken Salad is simply superb. I just wished there were more greens in the salad.

Tenderloin and Sausage Pizza - P350
Pizza Caprese - P270

The Pizza Caprese is The Frazzled Cook's signature pizza. It's garnished with tomatoes, kesong puti, and basil. This was the first time I saw a pizza that was served with a garlic oil sauce. And if you are not a fan of garlic, don't worry. The garlic oil is really mild.

Paella Negra - P625
Seafood Paella - P550

See the difference? More like taste the difference! Both paella actually tastes very good. A large serving can be shared by 5-6 people. For me, I prefer the Paella Negra for its flavor, color, and just because it's fun to eat especially if you smile after a spoon or two.

Grilled Chicken Rosemary - P180
Sizzling Squid - P450
Tenderloin Nuggets with Mashed Potatoes on Flat Bread - P350

The Sizzling Squid had a curious taste. I couldn't seem to pinpoint the flavor. One bite was different with the next. Nonetheless, it was quite good. A crowd favorite was the Tenderloin Nuggets. The meat truly is tender and juicy. I just find it a tad to salty for my taste. I guess that's what the mashed potatoes and flat bread is for.

Pancake ala Mode - P180

I thought the Pancake was overkill for dessert. I guess I was wrong because I found myself scarfing down one spoonful after another. It found it very light and the sweetness is just right. It wasn't just any ordinary pancake.

Romeo at Juliet

Friday, March 26, 2010 dfg 0 Comments

Last Monday, I watched the indie film Romeo at Juliet of Kisapmata Productions with my GF and some bloggers. I have to say, the movie was quite scandalous. No wonder it received an "X” rating from MTRCB. It had numerous scenes where Angel, portrayed by Alessandra de Rossi, acted out what a typical escort girl did. Judging by the poster of the film, you wouldn't have the slightest idea of it being risqué.

WARNING: ADULT CONTENT

http://photos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs213.snc3/22033_291388363952_269055968952_3429332_7595160_n.jpg

Before the film started, writer Jean Altavas, shared memories of her past which she put into the film. She admitted to have been taken advantage of by her cousin several times when she was a child. That incident left a huge emotional scar on her that had a negative repercussion on her life. She explained that our past had an immense effect as we grow up.

The title Romeo at Juliet doesn't quite fit the bill. Romeo and Juliet aficionados might find themselves lost throughout the film expecting a similar and familiar story.

Things you will like:
  • Shot in Hi-definition
  • For guys - Alessandra de Rossi and Maxine Eigenmann had a lot of very daring sexy scenes as escort girls although there weren't any nude scenes
Things you wouldn't like:
  • Dialogues are not seamless and natural
  • Lacked build up of love (not much kilig factor too)
  • Too much back flash
All-in-all, I thought the premise of the movie is interesting. Just a bit more improvements and it could be an outstanding film

Catch Romeo at Juliet in selected cinemas from March 24 onwards. For more information, check out the movie's Facebook Fan Page

Last Friday, Mel and I got to try Shrimp Katsu Bento made just for the Lenten Season. It's served with 2 shrimp patties with Japanese mayonnaise dip, rice, bean sprouts and fruit jelly dessert. The shrimp patties looked like chicken cordon bleu you usually find in the frozen section of the supermarket. It tastes great as it is but better with the Japanese mayo. Usually, I get "umay" if I eat too much Katsudon. But for this one, I didn't get that feeling. I also found the bean sprouts very crunchy and tasty. That's the way I like my vegetables to be. The manager said that to get the crunchiness and flavor, they make sure to blanch and season it properly. If you get to try this dish, try to mix everything in each bite you take. You will find that all the flavors are harmonious. The red fruit jelly is a perfect meal-ender. Make sure scoop your way to the bottom of the cup to get the sago bits.

Are you Savory or Sweet?

Thursday, March 18, 2010 dfg 0 Comments

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts is constantly cooking up new products that make their menu always refreshing to look at. From confectionery inventions of popular brands such as Hershey's, Reese's, Snickers and Oreos to themed concoctions of UAAP and Friendster donuts. You would think they ran out of recipes when suddenly, they surprise you yet with another creation - the Krispy Kreme Baked Creations.

Want to Win some KK goodies? Read on...

I was delighted to be part of the unveiling of the Baked Creations last Friday night. Director of R&D, Rick Cavenaugh, even flew in from Salem NC to talk to us about the arduous but exciting task of conceiving these creations.

Are you Sweet or Savory? The Baked Creations gives you an option to choose between Kruffins (Sweet) or Pull-aparts (Savory). Kruffins are American style hand made muffin-with-a-hole filled with fruits, nuts or chocolate. Pull-aparts, on the other hand, are originally from North Carolina and are made by hand-rolling balls of dough and pulled apart to form the shape of a doughnut.

Kruffins - P65
Pull Aparts - P75

For P99, you can avail of their promotion of 1 Baked Creation + Krispy Kreme Signature Coffee

Out of all the Pull-apart flavors, I only got to try the Cheese, probably because I was last on the line. I had a hard time eating the pull-apart because the paper baking cup was really glued to the bread. The Kruffins was a lot easier to eat. It's moist like a cupcake. Among all the Kruffins I tasted, I liked the Blueberry and Apple Streussel best.

Bloggers got to take home some goodies

Promo Mechanics:

Cantonese Soup Kitchen

Wednesday, March 17, 2010 dfg 0 Comments

The Cantonese Soup Kitchen reminded me of my grandma's cooking. She always made a Sibot soup for us to drink at least once a week. Sibut is a kind of soup made from Goji Berries that has medicinal benefits. At first I hated the Sibot because of it's pungent smell and bitter taste. But after a few years, I got to appreciate it.

There were some very interesting dishes that were served in this small humble restaurant. After all the years of dining at different selection of Chinese restaurants around the Metro, I thought I tasted it all. Boy was I wrong! The Cantonese Soup Kitchen is definitely a Chinese dining experience I won't forget.

Sibot with Duck Soup - P195
Special CSK Soup - P220
Chicken with Wintermelon & Ham Soup - P165

My grandma always reminded us to start your a meal with a warm bowl of soup to get our stomach going. I must say that I agree with her.

Don't you worry if you aren't a fan of herbs and bitter taste, the Sibot with Duck Soup isn't as pungent as the one my grandma used to make us. You will actually find mild and soothing. If at first you don't find the appealing, take another sip. I promise you that you will grow to love it as you drink more.

Not a fan of that herb flavor? Then try the Special CSK Soup or Chicken with Wintermelon & Ham Soup. These 2 soups are suited for any Filipino taste buds.

Just a bit of warning, some of the soups are good for sharing so you better ask the waiter.

Floral Bloom tea - P59

Lauren of pinoyfood.nimrodel.net ordered this fancy looking tea which blooms right in front of you. It starts off as a ball, then the waiter pours boiling water into the glass. After a few minutes, the ball opens up revealing a red flower that floats upright. Now isn't that cool? That's the first time I saw a tea like that.

Yang Chow Fried Rice - P170
Crispy Spring Rolls - P65
Sliced Beef Kenchi - P240

The Sliced Beef Kenchi is very savory. It is has a distinguishable flavor that I find very appealing. This is probably one of the best beef kenchi I have ever tasted. The Yang Chow Fried Rice was a bit disappointing. It was hard and dry. Either they overcooked it or the rice is already old.

Steamed Fish Fillet with Japanese Tofu - P230
Spinach with 2 Kinds Egg in Hotpot - P200
Garlic Burst Spareribs - P190

Those not a fan of century egg may have a change of heart once they have a nibble on the Spinach Hotpot. The flavor of the century egg is brought down a notch since it is diluted in water. But if you want to be on the safe side, order the Garlic Burst Spareribs. You can't go wrong with a dish that offers tender meat and mouth watering seasoning.

Satay Seafood Sotanghon in Hotpot - P250
Hot Shrimp Salad - P250

Satisfy you craving for something spicy with the Satay Seafood Sotanghon in Hotpot. Even if I have low tolerance for hot dishes, I found this quite enjoyable. On the other hand, if you have an incling for something on the sweet side, you can't go wrong with the Hot Shrimp Salad.

Almond Fish Gelatin - P80
Mango Pudding - P65

Black & White Gulaman - P60

There is nothing better that a dessert that slosh around inside your mouth. The dessert that took my taste buds away is the Mango Pudding. Visually appealing and tastefully satisfying, this is a good way of ending your meal.

Bigoli, the Fazoli's clone

Tuesday, March 16, 2010 dfg 0 Comments

I got to try Bigoli at SM North Edsa Annex A a couple of weeks ago with my fellow bloggers. The first thing we noticed is the distinguishable similarities between Bigoli and Fazoli's. Like Fazoli's, Bigoli has a pizza and pasta menu, unlimited garlic breadsticks, and bottomless soda. Perfect for kuripot citizens like you and me!

Now if only I could remember how I Fazoli's tasted, I would compare the quality of food between the 2 restaurants. It has been more than a year when I last ate at Fazoli so I'm probably not in the right state to make a fair judgment.

Stromboli - P120(8pcs)
Italian Chicken - P234(4pcs) P345(6pcs) P500(10pcs)

The stromboli is shaped like a cinnamon roll that is stuffed with cheese and your choice of beef or bacon. I'm not sure what the dip is but it doesn't help with uplifting the flavor. I'd probably pass on this one the next time I visit Bigoli. For the Italian chicken, I found the marinade OK. It's not as saucy as I hoped it would be but the tenderness of the chicken made up for it.

Spaghetti Al Pesto - P90(small) P130(large)
Fettuccine Carbonara P100(small) P140(large)
Chicken Pasta Bigoli - P80(small) P115(large)
Meltique Beef Pasta Bigoli - P125

Out of all the spaghetti that was served, I liked the Meltique Beef Pasta Bigoli best. The beef was tender and delicious. The sauce and ingredients compliments the beef and pasta. I believe Fazoli's don't have this kind of pasta on their menu. One point for Bigoli!

Lasagna - P180

Similar to Garfield, my favorite pasta of all time is Lasagna! When I see one, I just gobble it down. But before I do start scarfing it down, I make an assessment out of the very first bite. I'm quite hard to please when it comes to my favorite food. For this Lazagna, I rate it 7.5 out of 10.

Pepperoni Classico - P570(whole) P75(slice)

14 inch in diameter, the Pepperoni Classico is not to salty like that of Shakey's. Pepperoni spacing is not equally proportioned so too bad for those who get the slice with the least peperoni.

Tre Latte - P55
Turtle Cheesecake - P80
Bigoli's Tiramisu - P55

I couldn't seem to find the essence of cheese in the Turtle Cheesecake. Instead, it just tasted creamy and buttery. If you want to go ahead and get dessert, I suggest you order Tre Latte. Although it looks simple, it tastes great.

Would I have a second serving at Bigoli? Probably. I would like to try their other dishes as well.
