Outstanding Teachers' Search

The Search for Outstanding Teachers for 2012 is on. With the support of the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd), Metrobank Foundation, Inc. is once again looking for the country's sought-after Filipino educators. The theme for this year - "Raising Educational Excellence" aims to boost the quality of education by inspiring teachers to seek excellence in what they do. Educators found to have displayed remarkable dedication to their work and commitment to the student's development will have a chance to be recognized and awarded with P350,000 cash (part of which is for the faculty development program of his/ her school) plus a medal and a trophy. Finalists and semi-finalists will also get P20,000 and P10,000 with certificate of recognition respectively.

Contest Requirements:

Open to all teachers in the elementary, secondary, and higher education levels in both public and private schools throughout the country, with full-time appointment and with full-load
Must be actively teaching in the country for the last 10 years (inclusive of leaves not exceeding three years, provided the nominee is not on leave, i.e., actually teaching at the time of nomination)
With valid PRC license. For college teachers, you should have have the pertinent license for tertiary courses where a license is required in the exercise of the profession. (e.g. Medical Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, etc.)
Average performance ratings for the last five (5) years should at least be "Very Satisfactory" with no rating below "Satisfactory"

Contest Mechanics:

Get a two-page Basic Information Sheet (BIS) available in all Metrobank branches, DepEd regional and division offices, and CHED regional offices nationwide. You can also download it thru mbfoundation.org.ph

Entry Guidelines

Kindergarten teachers, provided that the kindergarten level is part of an integrated curriculum or part of an elementary school system
Technical-vocational teachers in the high school and college levels. Teachers teaching tech-voc courses in high school may be considered in the secondary category, while those teaching 4-year technology courses in college may join the higher education category
Deans, vice-deans, directors, chairpersons of departments, subject area coordinators, assistant principals, teacher-librarians, research or extension coordinators, head teachers, teachers-in-charge, and guidance counselors, provided they carry a teaching load for at least 50% of the total load required by the school for the school year
College/university teachers with research or extension assignments and other administrative duties, provided they carry an actual teaching load of at least 50% of the total load required by the school for the school year
College/university teachers teaching with full load in the graduate school level during the nomination period

Submit the Basic Information Sheet at the Metrobank Foundation Secretariat or at the nearest Metrobank branch in your area. No additional documents required

Elementary competition:

Schools are entitled to two (2) nominees. One (1) each from both primary (Kinder to Grade III) and intermediate levels (Grade IV to Grade VI)

Secondary and higher education competitions:

Schools are entitled to one (1) nominee, respectively
Satellite campuses of private colleges and universities and state universities and colleges (SUCs), which are not autonomous, are now entitled to nominate per competition

Professional and community involvement

DOE E-trike Design Contest

The Department of Energy launched the E-trike Design contest to promote the ingenuity of the Filipinos in creating our own version of the so-called "green vehicle". With the theme, "Bright Now! Do Right. Be Bright. Go E-trike!", generate 2D and 3D CAD drawings of the best aesthetic and functional design for the future Philippine E-trike look. Design should showcase a modern tricycle innovation that can hold a maximum of six (6) passengers excluding the driver. The top three (3) winners with the most aesthetic design shall receive P200,000 each. They will also be acknowledged at the DOE website plus have their designs for possible adoption in the agency's E-trike project. Seven finalists will also win P50,000 each as consolation.

A story of a couple who is about to get married with their families getting so excited to the point that their parents started to meddle with the wedding plans. The bride's mother, insists on holding the wedding at a ritzy hotel in Beijing whereas, the groom's father, being the director of a cooperative in a rural village, feels indebted to the community, wants to share the wedding to the whole village. The couple are getting in between as conflicts arise between the in-laws. This film is a funny portrayal of the clash of cultures between the city and country side

Confucius

Bodyguards and Assassins

In 1905, Hongkong was under the British rule and revolution was on the rise. Because of this, Dowager Cixi wanted Sun Yat-Sen assassinated. For the Chinese people who had been clamouring for freedom, they understood that keeping Sun Yat-Sen alive would mean keeping China’s hope to be liberated. Li Yutang, a businessman, gathered a tofu vendor, rickshaw pullers, a beggar and an orphan to serve as bodyguards. These bodyguards displayed their superb fighting skills as they battle it out with the assassins to protect Sun Yat-Sen,whom they have'’t even met. This action-historical movie garnered numerous awards from the 4th Asian Film Awards,29th Hongkong Film Awards,16th Hongkong Film Critics Society Awards and 47th Golden Horse Awards

King of Milu Deer

This 3D animated movie focuses on environment protection. It is a story of a white deer, Yoyo, who turned into a lady and made friends with Tzan-the prince of Kingdom of Clouds and Dreams. Tzan was ordered by the minister to search the Labyrinth Mountain to hunt for the Milu Deer to use it as a sacrifice to bring rains in the kingdom. But Tzan discovered the beauty of the Labyrinth Mountain and got closer to Yoyo. Together, they fought sea lizard monsters, fire,soldiers, and the evil Minister to save the wildlife and natural resources of the Labyrinth Mountain. The Venice Piazza Food Adventure is back! If you recall I had a great time enjoying the food from the first ever Food Adventure which I blogged about last July. This time around, more specific rules are set into place to make it fair for us foodies and the restaurants. For instance, you can avail the promo in one weekend (Saturday and Sunday) only. If you have availed the passport on a Sunday, samplers can be availed on that day and the following Saturday. The rate slightly increased to P600 (it was P550 then). Smart to Smart calls for 2 hours and Sun to Sun calls for 4 hours. They packaged the plan with a dual sim Nokia phone. The big question is, is the Smart Sun Dual Plan 549 worth it? Let's evaluate shall we?

Chuck's Deli Buffy Challenge

Are you up for a MEGA eating challenge like Bigby's Cafe Titanic Treat and Ridiculous Burger Challenge of Burger Avenue ? Well, here's something to add to your list. If you happen to pass by Eastwood or Serendra, drop by Chuck's Deli for their Buffy Challenge. Gobble down a full 10-inch slab of The Buffy slabwich within 5 minutes and you get it for FREE plus you get the awesome t-shirt (photo below) so you can go around boasting your achievement to everyone. If you fail the challenge, you have to pay the full amount of The Buffy slabwich plus a walk of shame. But if you're not up for The Buffy challenge just yet, you could try out Chuck Deli's other mouthwatering dishes which I made a review on below.

Are you up for the challenge?

The Buffy Challenge isn't for everyone, me included. I mean I don't think I could even finish a whole slab in one sitting. It's definitely not for the faint of ~~heart~~ stomach. In Eastwood branch, the Chuck Champs board looks empty with just 16 names. The Serendra branch has more names (29 to date) since that was the 1st branch to open. Most of them finished the monstrous challenge with only seconds to spare. One of those who completed it actually tried 3 times before he finally did it. The Chuck Champs of Eastwood

If you are planning to take on the challenge, here are a few tips Chuck's Deli shared with us.

The Buffy Slabwich has garlic sauce which is quite spicy. This might slow you down. You can tell the staff to hold the spice and they would gladly oblige.
Most of those who completed the challenge didn't eat the slabwich as is. They first ate the bread before they ate the patty.
Cross your fingers and hope you finish on time

The Buffy - P255 (half slab), P445 (full slab)

The Buffy is a chicken slabwich with buffalo (aka Buffy) sauce. The level of hotness was just right for me. Compared to a buffalo chicken, I'd say they could improve on their sauce. It's OK but it doesn't quite hit the spot for me in terms of flavor.

The Slabwiches

The Slabwiches are Chuck's signature super sandwiches served in 10-inch long Ciabatta bread. A slabwich weighs roughly around half a kilo and are sold in half or full sizes. Almost all of their food are home made. From bread, to sauces, to patties, to sausages, and chips. What I find impressive is the Ciabatta bread. It's cooked halfway in the commissary and fully cooked when someone orders a slabwich. This way, you don't bake the bread too much. I like the crunchy texture of the Ciabatta outside while retaining that soft spongy texture inside.

Reuben- P275 (half slab), P495 (full slab)

The first time I've tried a Reuben sandwich was in Peninsula hotel. Boy was the price outrageous but it was darn good. I couldn't help comparing the Reuben slabwich of Chuck's Deli with the one in Peninsula. The taste wasn't exactly the same but it was rather close to the satisfaction of my palette. I just wished they put in more cheese in this. The Reuben of Chuck's Deli is made from homemade Angus corned beef, swiss cheese, sauerkraut, mustard with garlic sauce. You can also choose to go with the spicy garlic sauce for that extra punch.

Faking Duck- P195 (half slab), P345 (full slab)

There's no typo in the title there. The Faking Duck is basically a slabwich that tries to imitate the taste of the peking duck by using the dark hoisin sauce used in peking duck. Instead of duck, the meat used here is pork. To complete the taste, leaks, lettuce and crispy noodles are added into the mix. I find his quite good. There's not too much fat on the pork so it's not greasy.

California Waki- P255 (half slab), P445 (full slab)

California maki in a slabwich! The California Waki makes use of kani, mango, egg, lettuce and wasabi mayo to give you that california maki taste you love. I wasn't able to try this those eating it looked like they enjoyed it.

Chuck's Burger - P245

I'm quite picky when it comes to burgers but Chuck's Burger just went to my top favorite list of burgers. The half-pound Angus beef patty was juicy and seasoned perfectly. I think even without the lettuce, tomato, spicy garlic sauce, and mayo mustard, this could still make me happy. I'm always all about the beef. A good burger always starts with a good beef patty. There's a spicy version of this burger which I didn't like. The chili just destroyed the taste of the patty.

All the tables has 2 sauce containers. One is labeled garlic sauce while the other shows spicy garlic sauce. I think this is the same sauce they use for the slabwiches and burgers. This way, you don't have to ask for more sauce.

Footlong Chilidog - P395
Chili Fries - Not in the menu

The Footlong Chilidog is a classic footlong 'dog served on a fresh hoagies bun with chips or onion rings as sides. The Chilidog for me was just average. It didn't really leave an impression on me. So did the chili fries which used the same sauce.

All slabwiches and footlong hotdogs comes with a sidekick of home-made chips or onion rings. The fries for me is a bit greasy but I did love the chips. The onion rings on the other hand was beautifully breaded to a crunchy texture.

I liked the Power Shake which had lettuce, apple and orange blended together. All the fruit and vegetable flavors were in complete harmony. Refreshing and healthy.

You can also try their imported beers and drinks. It's not listed on the menu but you can find it at the counter near the kitchen area.

MSI is currently offering their annual Great HP Sale. But before you do, try to be a smart shopper by checking the items you want online and calling if they have stocks.

I went there just a while ago I was quite surprised on how long the line was. You had to take a number (bottom right photo) from the guard before you can go in the office to browse the items. I didn't bother waiting because the current number was about 300+. I'll probably just go back later today with the list of items I want to get since the guard said that I can still come and use the number even if it's already passed.

If you do plan to go to the sale, I suggest you go early and get a number or get a number in late in the morning and just go back in line after lunch. The guard said they give up number as early as 7AM.

JBL Speakers plus Spyro Review

A few days ago, I got invited to JBL's event where they showed their latest line of speakers available in the market today. I remember back then we had these very sturdy JBL box type speakers back then which still worked when we sold them in a bazaar. The sound quality didn't deteriorate much given the length of usage and the abuse in high volume. I was curious as to what JBL currently has to offer us consumers. Good thing I actually went because I was lucky enough to win home a brand new JBL Spyro speakers which I made a review on below. Yahoo!

The JBL OnBeat caught my eye first. It has a cool design and it's especially made for iPhone and iTouch. It is able to rotate portrait or landscape. What I like most is how small this speaker is. It's great for those out of town trips you want to listen to music and videos to but requires an AC outlet for it to operate. It uses Phoenix transducers technology to deliver clear and crisp sound. Included is a remote control so you can sit back and relax.

Not to be confused with the JBL OnBeat is the JBL OnBeat Xtreme. It's a few inches larger than the JBL OnBeat and the design looks even more impressive. Similar to the JBL OnBeat, it can do portrait and landscape mode.

The great thing about this speakers is that it could dock iPod, iPhone and iPad devices. It also has built-in Bluetooth so you can do hands-free calling (at least with iPhone and iPad). When attached you can simply speak through the built-in microphone. This is perfect for my 2nd gen iTouch which doesn't have a built-in microphone.

JBL OnBeat Xtreme (w iPad attached)

Included is a JBL OnBeat Xtreme RF remote control which you can use to navigate your iPad, iPod and iPhone menus, iTunes songs, playlists, photos and videos. You can easily change tracks, system settings and more, from up to 30 feet (9 meters) in any direction.

The video being played (photo above) was set at maximum volume and it still delivered sound with minimal distortion. There's even several sound settings you can select. I like the power bass setting best. You need to hear it to believe it

JBL on Time Micro

JBL on Time Micro

Out of all the displayed speakers, the JBL on Time Micro probably had the poorest design. I just didn't think it was in the same level of all the other speakers in terms of aesthetics. Maybe it was the placement of controls, the plastic like "snooze" button or the casing or finish it had. It just didn't go well with the iTouch.

The JBL on Time Micro also acts as a radio and an alarm clock.

The JBL on Air Wireless has a very sleek design. Unfortunately, the design compromised its usability. The circular speaker design makes it a bit difficult to attach my iTouch. It only provided little room for me to work with in getting the iTouch into the dock which wasn't very convenient. It also took a bit of time getting used to the controls. It wasn't as easy as doing a trial and error. I would probably have to read the manual to fully understand how to operate this.

Looking into its features, it has a built-in radio and alarm clock. The LCD is also a big improvement as compared to the JBL on Time Micro.

JBL on Tour

JBL on Tour

JBL on Tour is a small, compact, ultra-portable speaker that can deliver 4 hours of playtime in one charge. It's best used for those out of town trips or small gatherings. If your familiar with X-mini, the JBL on Tour actually has the same features but performs better in terms of sound and design (at least for me).

Design wise, it looks really nice. It comes in White Glacier, Black Carbon or Red Dragon designs.

In terms of usability, the 3.5mm headphone jack can be securely hidden inside a rubber lining at the back of the speakers. No longer do you need to organize your wires again.

It also has that same feature with X-mini that could connect multiple speakers through the headphone jack as shown in the top-right photo above.

Now this is a sweet and simple entertainment speakers. It has a simple design yet usability is just right. There's a white LED power indicator on the front of the speakers as you can see on the photo above. What I do like most is the volume control. You can't see it in the photo but the volume control is located on the top of the speaker with the power LED. It's a disc that has a circular dimple (for grip) which you turn clockwise and counterclockwise to change the volume. To turn it off, you simply needed to turn it counterclockwise until you hear a slight "click" that locks the control.

The JBL Duet 2 would look nice beside your computer or laptop. There's also a JBL Duet 3. Only difference is the technology and size and price of course.

True to it's name, this speaker really looks like a creature from outer space. It's very cool looking. It comes in black and white design. The “capacitive” touch controls are accessible and easy to use. It delivers big sounds with it's subwoofer and satellite speakers.

The JBL Spot reminds me of the white robot in Wall-E. It has a dome shaped subwoofer and satellite speakers that resembles the cartoon character.

Volume control on the JBL Spot is located on top of one of the speakers. The volume control is sensitive to a light tap of the finger. It was quite responsive when I tried it on their demo. The only issue I had with the volume control is that you don't know the current volume of the speaker is before you play something. For all you know, it might surprise you with a loud sound when you play your media. I wished there was a sound that would indicate what the current volume is similar to when you increase the volume in Apple laptops using the keyboard.

JBL Spyro

The JBL Spyro displayed at the event is color fuchsia. Good thing I didn't win this color. It's not the color would emasculate my manhood but because it wouldn't look good in my room. The JBL Spyro is also available in sleek black or simple white.

The design is quite similar to the JBL Spot except for the obvious difference in the satellite speakers.

JBL Spyro Review

I like the minimalist packaging of the JBL Spyro. This is one box you would be proud of carrying around the mall. I just found it a bit inconvenient that there's no handle which meant you had to carry it with both arms.

All the parts and speakers are packaged securely and neatly. Unboxing it was a fun but tiring because of all the excess plastic the speakers and wires had. I sure wish they could try to minimize on wrapping plastic. This goes the same for other electronic companies out there. I know there's a purpose but do you really have to put 2 layers of plastic?

The JBL Spyro has 2 available AC power chords. I'm not sure what the technical terms for these sockets are but I know the big socket with the 3 pins is usually used in HK and Singapore. We usually use the 2 round pins which usually requires an flat pin adapter to plug it into our standard wall socket.

The manual is quite easy to understand. All the instructions that you need are on 1 page with illustration to aid. I had no problem setting this up.

I appreciate the fact that they made the ends of the left and right speakers different to easily identify which wire goes to which hole. But I'm guessing the right wire is a multi-pin wire (not sure what it's called) because it also carries the signal for volume control. I like the how the wires look and feel like ropes that you use in wall climbing.

The back of the subwoofer hold all the holes for the satellite speakers, the AC, the audio line in. It's arrange in such a way that the wires will not overlap with each other. On the middle is a button to power the JBL Spyro and on the rightmost is the control for the subwoofer bass level.

I usually turn off all my electronics at home when not in use so placing the button at the back makes it awkward for me to reach. My solution for this is to face the subwoofer backwards. It looks OK overall except for the fact that the wiring for the right and left satellite speakers has to cross over each other.

Another concern for me is the control for the subwoofer. I don't know about you but I often tweak the control of the subwoofer depending on the media I'm playing. Similar to the power button, it's hard to reach if it's at the back. The knob control also makes it uncomfortable to turn because the left satellite wire near it is blocking it once you turn it halfway.

Similar to the JBL Spot, the volume control is operated by tapping the + and - button found on the front of the satellite speakers. I really had a hard time in getting the volume control respond to my touch. I'm not sure if it uses sensor but I was already using my thumb and sometimes it doesn't respond. My brother tried to play with the volume as well and he had the same feedback. Like I said, I wished there was a sound notification so I know that the speakers is responding to my touch.

Despite the usability problems of the JBL Spyro, the sound it produced was outstanding. The bass provided by the subwoofer was awesome for something that size and the sound was crystal clear even at maximum volume. The JBL Spyro can easily fill up sound in a large room.

Overall, I think JBL really are the best in creating speakers in terms of sound and aesthetics but they really need to think the usability more thoroughly. The JBL Spyro provides great quality sound and should look amazing with your PC/gadgets and room. If you don't mind some of the flaws in usability, you should consider buying this speaker.

Thanksgiving Dinner and Sales

It's not in our culture to celebrate a longstanding American tradition - Thanksgiving. However, if you think about what it means to celebrate it, it might actually bring something good not only to the table, but to family and friends as well. A few days ago, Mel and I was invited to the United States Potato Board (USPB) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for a special Thanksgiving dinner. This was their way of saying thanks for the continued support of the media. All the same, I'd like to take this opportunity, to thank you, my readers, for the continued support of this blog.

Thanksgiving falls on November 24. In the US, Thanksgiving marks the time of Black Friday sales/deals, the biggest discount offering of the year across different products. Although we don't have real Black Friday sales/deals here in the Philippines. I gathered some local sales by SM (Thanksgiving sale on Nov 24), Black Friday Sale Event (Nov 25-27) and Winter Wonderland Pre-Christmas Bazaar (Nov 25-27). Read more at the end of the post.

Thanksgiving Dinner

We had our dinner at Restaurant 9501 inside the ABS-CBN building ELJ Communication Center. It was my first time to go inside that building. We didn't see any local celebrities though on our way up to the restaurant.

Our timing was perfect. Chef Myrna Segismundo was just talking about how she whipped up original and off-the-menu recipes using US Frozen Potatoes. All from appetizer to the dessert! It's like being in Iron Chef haha.

While waiting for the 1st dish to arrive, we munched on some homemade potato bread with a choice of tomato jam or Adobo pate. The potato bread was a quite heavy so we only took a couple of slices. Not sure how they infused the potato into the bread but it gives it a hint of that potato flavor. The tomato jam was just superb. I liked how it tasted like regular jam but with tomato chunks. The Adobo pate wasn't bad as well. This seemed like a good start to dinner

Our first dish was the Seared Scallop, Straight Cut Potato and Waldorf Salad. The Scallop was perfectly cooked and the sauce and dressing complimented it nicely.

Our next dish was a divine Truffled Mashed Potato and Porcini Mushroom Froth. It had mushroom bits underneath that gave the soup texture with every bite. We used a small teaspoon to drink from it. It was nice because each and every sip made the next one better.

Before we were served the main course, we were offered a glass of wine. I got myself a white wine. It was poured into this nice wineglass that had etching of the restaurant.

Finally, the bird has arrived. The Roast U.S. Tom Turkey is accompanied by Candied Spuddies splashed with Giblet Gravy. Turkey isn't as flavorful as chicken because it's more lean so you need to add a lot of flavors to make the dish extraordinary. This turkey really made a mark on my palette. I finished the whole plate clean. The candied potatoes was remarkable.

To cap the evening, we were served the dessert. A Mashed Potato Crepes and Vodka Sabayon. I wonder how potato was infused with the crepe.

Libros Festival: FREE Workshop

For two days this November, different artists, performers, thinkers, musicians, writers, readers and book lovers of all ages will assemble for the First Libros Festival. This is in celebration of the National Book Month and also in preparation for the coming Christmas season. The affair will display books from local and international publishers and other education-related products and services. A line-up of events will be featured to benefit the OurLibrary project of the Filipinas Heritage Library. One of the highlights of this event is the FREE Book Writing Workshop which will be on November 24 from 5-7PM at the Filipinas Heritage Library, Makati Ave., Makati City. Dr. Isagani Cruz, a multi-awarded author, will discuss everything that a writer should know from the basics of choosing a book title, to publishing and selling a book. Cebu Pacific celebrates Christmas and the once in a lifetime date today of 11-11-2011 with a P11 lite fare promo. Seats for available are for both local and international destinations. Purchase your tickets from today until November 13, 2011 or until seats last. Travel Period is from June 1 - December 15, 2012. Fares are exclusive of government fees, taxes and fuel surcharges. I tried checking if there were still seats for Korea for the P11 fare and it turns out that there still some seats left!

Zest Airways is also joining the 11-11-2011 bandwagon by offering a P11 seat sale promo on all their domestic destinations. Sale period is from today until seats last. Travel period is from June 15 - October 15, 2012. Fares are inclusive of 12% vat but exclusive of fuel surcharge, ASF and YQ 12% vat.

Moviemov: Italian Cinema Now

Another exciting event this month awaits moviegoers as the Italian embassy along with the other film organizations and sponsors from the country present Moviemov: Italian Cinema Now. As supported by the General Direction for Cinema of the Italian Ministry of Heritage and Culture, Movivemov - a traveling festival - aims to have future collaborations and lasting partnerships between Italian and Filipino filmmakers so they can have an international exchange of ideas and concepts in making films. Movies including tributes to the famous Italian horror film director Dario Argento, Bernardo Bertolluci, a great Italian director are in the line up. It also features films from award winning Filipino director Brillante Mendoza. The Conformist, Last Tango in Paris, The Dreamer, Serbis, Lola, and Kinatay are among the pool.
